Chicopee Elementary School

Summary:

Chicopee Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Gainesville, Georgia, with 771 students enrolled. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Hall County elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Chicopee Elementary faces significant challenges, including significantly lower proficiency rates on the Georgia Milestones assessments compared to the Hall County and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 8.7% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA, compared to 29% in Hall County and 38.4% statewide. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 93.47% to 93.77% over the past few years, much higher than the nearby schools in the Hall County district. Additionally, Chicopee Elementary spends between $8,067 and $9,225 per student, which is lower than the spending levels of the other Hall County schools examined.

The consistent low performance of Chicopee Elementary School suggests deep-rooted challenges that the school has struggled to address. The extremely high free/reduced lunch rate indicates that the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population, which likely contributes to the school's academic struggles. When compared to other elementary schools in the Hall County district, as well as schools in the neighboring Gainesville City district, Chicopee Elementary lags significantly behind its peers in terms of test scores and overall performance, suggesting the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes of its struggles and implement effective strategies for school improvement.

Open Quote This school does not deserve to have a one-star rating. The test scores are not as high as other schools, but that could certainly be directly related to the fact that 75%-85% of the students are second language learners and the tests are administered in English, a language many of them only speak at school. Or it could be related to the fact that 92% of the students live in poverty. It's hard to do well on a test in a language you don't fully understand, when you don't have a bed or you don't get the medication you need when you are sick, or you are homeless. These type of rankings are completely bogus. It tells you nothing useful at all, except that the students are not as good test takers as other schools.
Chicopee is a wonderful, warm place where the teachers work diligently to meet the needs of the students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
