Garrett Elementary School

Summary:

Garrett Elementary School is a public elementary school in Augusta, Georgia, serving 369 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Richmond County School District, which is ranked 176 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite spending more per student ($10,622 in 2018-2019) than many nearby schools, Garrett Elementary consistently underperforms the Richmond County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessment in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.7% of 3rd graders, 31.7% of 4th graders, and 20.4% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 20.6%, 16.9%, and 26.9% for Richmond County, and 38.4%, 37%, and 48.2% for the state. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 97.67% to 98.1% over the past 3 years, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Despite its relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.3 to 11.3 over the past 3 years, Garrett Elementary is struggling to provide a quality education to its students. The school's underperformance, despite its resource advantages, highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the school's practices and the implementation of targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

Open Quote This school isoutragous!!! The 5th grade social studies teacher told my daughter's father that all "12 year old little girls are bitches", and she is a bully who loves to pick on certain students. The so called counilsor, apparently received her degree out of a big box of cereal, and the principal there are no words!!! I am currently awaiting information from Atlanta, as to what my next move should be concerningthis really messed up school.
I plan on removing my kid within 2weeks Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
