Despite its small class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio ranging from 8.7 to 11.6 students per teacher, Stewart County Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the state average on the Georgia Milestones Assessment. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science were significantly lower than the state averages, with the largest gaps in 4th and 5th grade subjects. The school has been ranked in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools for the past several years and maintains a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state.

The challenges faced by Stewart County Elementary School may be exacerbated by the high concentration of students from low-income families, with an extremely high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 98.52% to 100% over the past few years. Nearby schools, such as Randolph County Elementary School and Chattahoochee County Education Center, also have relatively low performance, but they outperform Stewart County Elementary School in most academic areas, suggesting the school's struggles may be more severe than its neighbors.

Open Quote I go to that school, and it is a long way from a good school. Don't get me wrong the teachers are great, but the school board is trashed. Their test scores have a learning curve, and 72% of the student body has an iep. if you really went their you would know that they are not even close to beig like they say they are. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
