Castleford School

Summary:

Castleford School is an alternative public school serving grades PK-12 in Castleford, Idaho, with a total enrollment of 306 students as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school stands out for its consistently high graduation rates, decreasing chronic absenteeism, and serving a population with a relatively low socioeconomic status.

One of Castleford School's key strengths is its high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 90% to 100% over the past five school years. The school has also seen a significant improvement in chronic absenteeism, decreasing from 15.3% in 2020-2021 to 8.7% in 2022-2023. However, the school's academic performance, particularly in math, lags behind the state and district averages, and it faces competition from the higher-performing Xavier Charter School in the region.

Castleford School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 60.12% to 89.84% over the past three school years, suggesting that the school serves a population with a relatively low socioeconomic status. In contrast, the nearby Xavier Charter School has a free and reduced lunch rate of only 25.6%. Additionally, Xavier Charter School has significantly higher math and English Language Arts test scores across most grade levels, indicating that it may be serving a more academically advantaged student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I found it unbelievable to see Castleford as a 2 Star school on here especially if you use test scores since it is one of the only schools in our area that has managed to pass AYP every year with a large majority of ESL students in addition to a large percentage of kids from very low income homes.

What your rating does not reflect is the tremendous amount of community involvement there is with this small town school. The local men's club gives scholarships to every single kid that goes on for college or technical/vocational education after they graduate. Many of the high school students are taking dual credit classes with the local community college, College of Southern Idaho.

We can't wait until our twin boys start school here. How can you beat a 12.1 student teacher ratio at a public school no less? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
