Neal Math Science Academy

Summary:

Neal Math Science Academy is a public middle school located in North Chicago, Illinois, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 529 students. The school is part of the North Chicago School District 187, which is ranked 676 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Over the past several years, Neal Math Science Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Illinois middle schools, with a ranking between 1100-1295 out of around 1300 schools.

The school faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 33.5% to 48.7%, well below average academic performance, and significant disparities in outcomes for different student subgroups. For example, in 2023-2024, only 18.4% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 41.2% statewide, and only 5.8% were proficient or better in Math, compared to 28.4% statewide. The school's African American and Hispanic students, as well as its English Language Learners and Special Education students, performed particularly poorly compared to their peers across Illinois. Despite relatively high spending per student, ranging from $13,585 to $19,952, the school has struggled to translate this investment into improved academic outcomes.

When comparing Neal Math Science Academy to nearby middle schools, the differences in performance are stark. For instance, Highland Middle School in Libertyville has significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA (82.3%) and Math (48.7%), while schools like Lake Bluff Middle School and Deer Path Middle School East and West also consistently outperform Neal Math Science Academy across multiple academic measures. These comparisons highlight the significant challenges facing the school and the need for a concerted effort to address the root causes of its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The leadership has no control over the school. The students behave terribly usually without the knowledge of the faculty or the "Security" team.
My son was assaulted and no one knew until I went in to the school and raised hell. What is the point of having a security team on campus if students
get assaulted in the hallways and dont have the confidence in the school leadership to speak up for themselves

My son was assaulted several times in the hallways of this school. Not by a bigger kid hoping to get lunch money. It was a female student just for the sake of bullying.
When notified the student was not punished accordingly, a light slap on the wrist. If this was a school that was not in such a bad area the consequences for those kind ofactions are much more severe. There is no one to teach these students right from wrong.

This school is a shame. It is very close to a navy base so military members that cannot get their children into the charter school have almost no choice but to
try to deal with this place. My son only attended for two months before bullying made me withdraw him. Don't try to tell the staff of their issues. It is clear
that no one at or around this school cares. Not the faculty, not the students, and definitely not the parents Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
