George Washington Elementary School

Summary:

George Washington Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Alsip, Illinois, serving 238 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Cook County School District 130, which is ranked 700 out of 813 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

George Washington Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Illinois elementary schools, with academic performance significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 15.8% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 41.2% statewide and 28% in the district. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as only 6.8% of 5th-grade students being proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 26.8% statewide. Additionally, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.7% in 2019-2020 to 35.1% in 2023-2024, much higher than the state and district averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Lincoln Elementary, Whittier Elementary, and Paul Revere Intermediate, also perform below state and district averages, but generally outperform George Washington Elementary School in academic achievement and other key metrics. The high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds at George Washington Elementary School may be a significant factor contributing to the school's academic challenges, and the school's increasing chronic absenteeism rate is also a concern that requires further investigation and targeted interventions.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children have been in this school for 3 years. We have had two excellent teachers! Beyond that we have been very disappointed in the district. Standards are low. There seems to be very little time devoted to science. There are no options to engage or grow students that are excelling. Parent involvement is non-existent and not encouraged. Very unwelcoming culture. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
