Lowell Elementary School

Summary:

Lowell Elementary School is a public elementary school in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving students from kindergarten to 4th grade. With a declining student racial diversity and significant academic and attendance challenges, Lowell Elementary faces an uphill battle to provide a high-quality education for its students.

Academically, Lowell Elementary has consistently underperformed compared to the state and its own MSD Warren Township district. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 37.04% of Lowell students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 38.6% statewide and 19.41% in the district. In Math, 38.62% of Lowell students were proficient or better, compared to 52.4% statewide and 13.73% in the district. The school has also struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching 21.3% in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the state average.

While Lowell Elementary performs better academically than some nearby schools in the MSD Warren Township district, such as Liberty Park Elementary and Hawthorne Elementary, it still lags behind the state averages. In comparison, schools in the Beech Grove City Schools district, such as Central Elementary and Hornet Park Elementary, have higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates. Addressing the root causes of Lowell Elementary's challenges, such as improving teaching quality, providing targeted interventions, and addressing the needs of its high-poverty population, will be crucial for the school to see meaningful progress.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
