Summary:

Thompson Elementary School in Arlington, MA serves 502 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the highly-ranked Arlington school district, which is ranked 27th out of 351 districts in Massachusetts and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thompson consistently performs well on MCAS assessments, with a higher percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science compared to the state average. Compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Arlington district, such as M. In addition to its strong academic performance, Thompson spends more per student than the state average, with $16,024 spent per student in the 2020-2021 school year, compared to the state average of $14,379. This suggests the school may have access to additional resources and funding, which could contribute to its success. While Thompson performs well overall, there are a few areas where the school could potentially improve, such as the performance of Asian students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which have lower rankings compared to other subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son LOVED this school. He had nearly perfect attendance during his years there and got a perfect score on the MCAS when he was is in 4th grade. I attribute this to the excellent leadership and teachers at the school. He is now in 8th grade and still making straight A's because the Thompson school set the tone for enjoying school life. This school is culturely rich and diverse, which is excellent for the children there. They also have a fantastic after-school homework club. The only thing hurting this school is the age of the building, which I hear is soon to receive major updates. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
