The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students, around 49%, compared to the 16-38% range at nearby schools. Guilford's test scores, as measured by the MCAP assessments, are generally lower than the Howard County Public Schools and Maryland state averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates in Mathematics and English Language Arts were 28.5% and 47.4%, respectively, compared to the district's 41.1% and 63%, and the state's 24.1% and 48.4%.

Guilford Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's student subgroups, such as Asian, African American, and Hispanic students, generally perform below their peers in the state. Additionally, Guilford has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 40.4% in 2020-2021 to 56.49% in 2022-2023, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. While Guilford faces significant challenges, the school's location within a highly-ranked school district suggests that there may be opportunities for collaboration and the implementation of effective strategies to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I attended the most wonderful production of 'Aladdin' last night at Guilford Elementary School - it was put on by the 4th/5th grade chorus. The children and staff did an absolutely fantastic job - those productions are so much work for all involved, and for those teachers not involved (they give up time so that the students may have this beneficial experience). Many compliments to the whole school.

The entrance to the school has been redone and reflects a caring, happy, attentive attitude by the school population! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
