Oakland Mills High

Summary:

Oakland Mills High is a public high school serving 1,401 students in grades 9-12 in Columbia, Maryland, which is part of the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district. While the school has a diverse student population, it has struggled academically compared to nearby schools, with lower test scores and a declining statewide ranking.

One key differentiator is Oakland Mills High's racial diversity, with a student body that is 43.83% African American, 22.91% Hispanic, and 8.78% Asian, which is more diverse than schools like Mount Hebron High and River Hill High. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is significantly lower than the district and state averages, with only 6.7% of students proficient in mathematics compared to 41.1% in the district and 24.1% statewide. Additionally, Oakland Mills High has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 42.9%, indicating a larger proportion of economically disadvantaged students.

Despite the school's diversity and relatively high spending per student of $16,920, Oakland Mills High's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 63rd out of 231 Maryland high schools in 2013-2014 to 114th out of 146 in the current school year. This suggests that the school may face challenges in providing the necessary resources and support to help its students succeed, especially when compared to higher-performing nearby schools like Centennial High and River Hill High.

Open Quote This school is amazing. The ratings are so low because the majority of Howard County has a racial bias towards Oakland Mills. This place is absolutely amazing and the best memories I’ve ever created have been in this building. Close Quote

Open Quote We just enrolled my daughter for her freshman year at Oakland Mills and we were greeted with the nicest staff members. We have always done private school and were a bit nervous to try a public school. They were so friendly and helpful and they were very patient with my daughter who had a ton of questions for them. I love this neiborhood and the people here are great! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
