Bradbury Heights Elementary

Summary:

Bradbury Heights Elementary is an elementary school located in Capitol Heights, Maryland, serving 444 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bradbury Heights Elementary faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly African American (73.2%) and Hispanic (22.07%), and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (55.96% to 79.08%). The school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools, with academic performance that is significantly lower than the state and county averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 11.6% of Bradbury Heights students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 36.1% for the county and 48.4% for the state. While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and a high per-student spending of $17,867, these resources have not translated into improved academic outcomes.

Interestingly, some of the nearby schools, such as Francis Scott Key Elementary and District Heights Elementary, also perform poorly, with rankings in the bottom 20% of Maryland elementary schools. However, other nearby schools, like Overlook Elementary and Capitol Heights Elementary, perform significantly better, with rankings in the top 25% of Maryland elementary schools. This suggests that there may be opportunities to learn from the higher-performing schools and implement best practices at Bradbury Heights Elementary to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter went here for one year. I was impressed by her Pre-K teacher. She was awesome. This school could use some improvements. Given that this is the new principal's first year give it time to improve. I liked the events the school put on and we were always given plenty of notice. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
