Georgetown Central School

Summary:

Georgetown Central School is a small public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in the town of Georgetown, Maine, with just 51 students enrolled. Despite its small size, the school has a long history of strong academic performance, consistently ranking among the top elementary schools in the state.

One of the key factors that sets Georgetown Central School apart is its exceptional academic performance. In the 2022-2023 school year, 74.07% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 64.63% statewide and 70.21% for the Regional School Unit 01 - Lkrsu district. In Mathematics, 70.37% of students were proficient or better, compared to 48.68% statewide and 62.5% for the district. This consistent academic excellence is particularly impressive given the school's small size and rural location. In contrast, some nearby schools like Kate Furbish Elementary School and Dike-Newell School have more diverse student populations.

Another notable characteristic of Georgetown Central School is its exceptionally low student-teacher ratio, with just 6.4 students per teacher in 2022-2023. This is significantly lower than the nearby schools, which range from 8.5 to 11.9 students per teacher. While the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 24.4% in 2022-2023 is higher than the state average, it is still lower than some other local schools, such as Boothbay Region Elementary School (42.0%) and Southport Central School (47.3%). Overall, Georgetown Central School's unique characteristics and strong academic performance make it an interesting case study in the context of the surrounding schools in the region.

Open Quote It was a very fun and magical school... but I didn't really get a proper education. I loved the things we learned about. The school was really awesome. I just wish I actually knew things before going into middle school.. I really liked my first grade teacher. I forgot how to spell her last name but I think it was Ms. Saufler or something like that? She was the best. I hope she's still alive. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
