Woodland School

Summary:

Woodland School is a public charter elementary school serving 206 students in grades K-8 in Traverse City, Michigan. The school has shown strong academic performance, particularly in certain grade levels and subject areas, but has also experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism in recent years.

Woodland School has demonstrated impressive academic achievements, with 65.4% of 6th graders proficient or better in M-Step/English Language Arts, significantly higher than the state average of 37.5%. In math, 84.21% of 7th graders were proficient or better, compared to the state average of 32.1%. When compared to nearby public elementary schools, such as Willow Hill Elementary and TCAPS Montessori, Woodland School generally performs better in academic assessments, particularly in math and English language arts.

Despite its academic strengths, Woodland School has faced some challenges, including a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.3% in 2017-2018 to 30.2% in 2022-2023. Additionally, the school has a much higher percentage of white students (over 90%) compared to the nearby public schools, which have more diverse student populations. The school's free and reduced-price lunch rate has also increased from 19.62% in 2020-2021 to 30.1% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of students from lower-income households. These factors may be important in understanding the school's performance and the needs of its student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote So thankful we found Woodland School. This is our 8th year as a Woodland family and the authentic learning experiences, hands on approach, and strong community make this program the truly special place that it is! My children have cried on snow days! Yes, seriously! The halls are filled with joyful children who enjoy learning and have true ownership and a deep connection to their education.
Make sure you call about their lottery process for enrollment because there is always a huge waiting list! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
