University High School

Summary:

University High School is a public high school located in Ferndale, Michigan, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 476. The school has a predominantly African American student body, with 95.38% of students identifying as such in the 2022-2023 school year.

While University High School maintains a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 94.1% to 98.2% over the past five years, the school consistently underperforms compared to the Ferndale Public Schools district and the state of Michigan in various academic measures, such as proficiency in M-Step/Science, M-Step/Social Studies, and SAT/Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. For example, in 2023-2024, only 13.2% of University High School's 11th-grade students were proficient or better in M-Step/Science, compared to 16.7% for the Ferndale Public Schools district and 37.5% for the state of Michigan. Additionally, the school's dropout rate has been increasing, from 0.0% in 2018-2019 to 2.7% in 2022-2023, and it has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 57.1% in 2019-2020 to 81.3% in 2022-2023, which is much higher than the state average.

Interestingly, while University High School and Tri County Educational Center (another Ferndale Public Schools high school) have similar racial demographics, Tri County Educational Center performs significantly worse in terms of graduation rates (29.8% vs. 95.5% at University High School) and dropout rates (18.6% vs. 2.7% at University High School). Additionally, University High School has a higher per-student spending ($11,601 in 2022-2023) compared to Tri County Educational Center ($7,281 in 2022-2023), but this does not translate to better academic outcomes, suggesting that factors beyond funding may be contributing to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
