HowardEllis Elementary School

Summary:

HowardEllis Elementary School is a public elementary school in Niles, Michigan, serving 591 students in grades K-5 and part of the Niles Community Schools district.

HowardEllis has several strengths, including outperforming the district and state in academic proficiency, particularly in 3rd and 4th grade ELA and Math. The school also has a strong special education program, ranking 101 out of 225 Michigan elementary schools. However, HowardEllis faces challenges, such as a higher chronic absenteeism rate that has increased from 8.2% to 18.7% in recent years. The school has a relatively high percentage of students (65.31%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which may contribute to its academic performance and attendance issues. Compared to nearby schools, HowardEllis outperforms Ballard Elementary and Patrick Hamilton Elementary, but lags behind the higher-performing Eastside Connections School, which is also part of the Niles Community Schools district.

HowardEllis has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of White students (68.36%) and students of two or more races (10.15%) compared to the state average. However, the school has seen varying performance among its racial subgroups, with White and multi-racial students generally performing better than African American and Hispanic students. Addressing these achievement gaps and the school's chronic absenteeism issues could help HowardEllis continue to improve and better serve its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Staff at school difficult. School has failed to communicate with parents often. This school refused to provide special education services to my child for several years. Howard school has a disciplinary policy that the majority of students are held to, however the administration has exempted their few select students. These exempt students are allowed to break rules while the administration and teachers look the other way. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
