Hennepin Schools Lower Campus

Summary:

Hennepin Schools Lower Campus is a public charter elementary school serving 255 students in grades K-4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance and a student population that is predominantly African American and economically disadvantaged.

Despite the school's overall struggles, it demonstrates some strengths in serving specific student subgroups. In 2023-2024, Hennepin Schools Lower Campus ranked 75th out of 310 Minnesota elementary schools for African American students and 84th out of 303 for English Language Learner students in math proficiency. This suggests the school may be effectively supporting these populations, even as its overall performance lags behind the state and district averages. The school's extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, over 98%, indicates the significant economic disadvantages faced by the student body.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Folwell Elementary, Lake Nokomis Wenonah Elementary, and Friendship Academy of Arts-Primary, Hennepin Schools Lower Campus has a much more homogeneous student population, with a significantly higher percentage of African American students. This unique demographic profile may contribute to the school's challenges and performance profile. Further investigation into the factors influencing the school's performance, as well as strategies to address the needs of its student population, could be valuable for the school and the Minneapolis Public School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Three of my children go to school. I have not had any bad experience. The staff is incredible and the kids amazing. Hennepin Elementry school is a great school for so many reasons: Test score, community engagement, teacher are culturally relevant, relationship-between students and teacher are any other schools I have ever seen. Environment plays a big role for students learning, Hennepin creates that environment where students absolutely loved and flourished. Students get all the support whether is an academic or social skill. All I can say is that if you want your kids to be scholars and have high academic and leadership skills Hennepin Schools is the right school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
