Summary:

Benton Elementary is a public elementary school located in Marshall, Missouri, serving grades 3-4 with a total enrollment of 206 students. The school is part of the Marshall School District, which is ranked 305 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Benton Elementary consistently performs below the state and district averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 25.1% of 3rd-grade students and 27.3% of 4th-grade students at Benton Elementary were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to the state averages of 40.8% and 44.4%, respectively. Similarly, in ELA, only 27.6% of 3rd-grade students and 27.9% of 4th-grade students at Benton Elementary were proficient or better, compared to the state averages of 41.6% and 46.2%. The school also struggles with its English Language Learner (ELL) and Low Socioeconomic Status (SES) student populations, ranking in the bottom 50% of Missouri elementary schools for these subgroups.

Interestingly, Benton Elementary and its closest neighboring school, Eastwood Elementary, have very similar performance profiles, both ranking in the bottom 20% of Missouri elementary schools. However, the nearby Sweet Springs Elementary, which is in a different district, performs significantly better, ranking in the top 50% of Missouri elementary schools. Despite the increase in per-student spending at Benton Elementary, the school's academic performance has not shown significant improvement, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
