Hawthorne Elementary

Summary:

Hawthorne Elementary is a public elementary school in Mexico, Missouri, serving 429 students in grades 1-5. The school is part of the Mexico 59 school district, which is ranked 300 out of 386 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hawthorne Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, low test scores in Mathematics and English Language Arts compared to state and district averages, and a very high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. While the school's spending per student is higher than average, its performance has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Missouri elementary schools over the past decade. The school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic and White students, has also declined in recent years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Hallsville Primary and Two Mile Prairie Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary's challenges stand out. These nearby schools have significantly higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism rates, suggesting that the high rates of poverty and chronic absenteeism at Hawthorne Elementary may be contributing to its low academic performance. Addressing these underlying issues could be crucial in improving student outcomes at the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Hawthorne elementary in Mexico MO has been excellent for all three of my children but has been wonderful for my son with Autism. He attended a neighboring school his entire life before we relocated and there is no comparison. Mr Señor is highly aware of what his disability involves and has been of great help to my son and myself. Highly recommended Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
