Sterling Elementary

Summary:

Sterling Elementary is a public elementary school located in Warrensburg, Missouri, serving grades 3-5 with a student population of 389. It is part of the Warrensburg R-VI school district, which is ranked 173 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Sterling Elementary is part of the same school district as Martin Warren Elementary, Ridge View Elementary, and Maple Grove Elementary, its performance lags behind these nearby schools in several key metrics. Sterling Elementary has consistently higher chronic absenteeism rates compared to the district and state averages, and its test scores in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) are generally lower than the district and state averages. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has been declining over the past several years, from 372 out of 1,045 Missouri elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 505 out of 906 in 2023-2024.

Another area of concern is Sterling Elementary's performance on certain student subgroups, such as White students and Special Education students. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school ranked 485 out of 668 Missouri elementary schools for White students, with a 1-star rating. Despite increased spending per student, from $8,674 in 2019-2020 to $10,995 in 2021-2022, these investments have not translated into improved student outcomes. These findings suggest that Sterling Elementary may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address these challenges and improve student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Nurse CC here is wonderful, as are the lunch ladies, and Sheila at the front desk. The librarian is a friendly, warm person. These people are the only reason I give sterling any stars at all.
My concerns are regarding my child's safety, and this school's accountability. Transportation through Apple Bus is a nightmare, and some folks in this building only add to that problem. For example, my child was forced off the bus at the wrong stop, and the counselor here at Sterling told me that QUOTE "You should expect that from time to time". No. I should not. My 9-yr old child should have been listened to, you might have found your error if you had. They acknowledged that it was indeed their error, they just didn't care.
The principal dodges phone calls. The superintendent is not worth the paper his job title is printed on. This is obviously a small-town school where everybody gets hired regardless of quality. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
