Pine Grove High School

Summary:

Pine Grove High School is an alternative public school in Ripley, Mississippi, serving around 650 students in grades PK-12. The school is part of the South Tippah School District, which is ranked 37th out of 130 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Despite having a significantly higher percentage of white students (97.23%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like Blue Mountain High School and Myrtle Attendance Center, Pine Grove High School consistently outperforms the district and state in proficiency rates across various assessments. For example, in 2023-2024, Pine Grove's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 74%, compared to 57.7% for the state. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, Pine Grove High School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.7 to 14.3 over the past three school years, which is lower than the ratios at some nearby schools. This combination of high poverty levels and strong academic performance suggests the school may have effective teaching practices and support systems in place to help students succeed, despite the challenges faced by the student population. Further investigation into the school's strategies could provide valuable insights for other schools serving economically disadvantaged communities.

Open Quote I am a recent graduate of Pine Grove High School. I received a great education that I believe has prepared me for college and for life there after. The teachers not only want you to succeed, they drive you toward that success. They also try to keep you happy while teaching you and they make learning fun. I would recommend this school to anyone in Tippah County who wanted to find a good school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
