Davidson Elementary School

Summary:

Davidson Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-6 in Water Valley, Mississippi, part of the Water Valley School District, which is ranked 67 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school has a diverse student population, with 47.77% White, 44.3% African American, and smaller percentages of other racial/ethnic groups.

Davidson Elementary's test scores are generally below the state averages across grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates ranging from 36.5% to 53.3% in English Language Arts and 31.1% to 55% in Mathematics, compared to state averages of 39.7% to 57.7% and 51.8% to 55%, respectively. The school has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 99.45% to 99.5% over the past three school years, significantly higher than the state average. However, Davidson Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.5 to 16.7 over the past three years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Pope Elementary School and Central Elementary, both part of higher-performing districts, Davidson Elementary generally underperforms on test scores, particularly in Mathematics. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has declined from 177 out of 381 Mississippi elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 256 out of 390 in 2023-2024, indicating a relative decline in performance compared to other schools in the state. While the low student-teacher ratio may be an asset, it does not seem to be offsetting the other factors that are impacting student performance, and addressing the needs of the school's economically disadvantaged population and improving academic outcomes should be key priorities for the Water Valley School District.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
