Columbus Elementary School

Summary:

Columbus Elementary School is a public elementary school in Columbus, Montana, serving 304 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Columbus Elementary District, which is ranked 95 out of 300 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Columbus Elementary School consistently outperforms the state average in academic proficiency, with 54.88% of students proficient in Mathematics, 57.32% in Reading, and 43.64% in Science, compared to state averages of 36.59%, 46.03%, and 37.03%, respectively. The school has maintained a strong academic ranking, placing between 17th and 109th out of all Montana elementary schools over the past decade, and earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger in most years. However, the school's student-teacher ratio of 15.2 is higher than nearby schools like Roberts School (8.1), Fishtail School (13.0), and Absarokee School (13.1).

While Columbus Elementary School's academic performance is impressive, the school's student population is predominantly White (88.82%), which is lower in racial diversity compared to the state average. This lack of diversity may limit the exposure of students to different cultural perspectives and experiences. To further enhance the educational experience, the school could explore ways to maintain a lower student-teacher ratio and address the lack of racial diversity, potentially by analyzing spending per student and optimizing resource allocation.

Open Quote Our family of 6 just moved here from Dillon due to a work related move.

Our nine year old son was a straight A-B student in second grade last year. This year in 3rd we cannot get above a C average. We are not getting any positive feed back from the school other than "He will adjust". We're approaching the 2nd part of the year and there is no improvements.

If you have to move in to the area go to a different school district that will HELP your kids. NOT "Let them adjust"... Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
