Upchurch Elementary

Summary:

Upchurch Elementary is a public elementary school located in Raeford, North Carolina, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 698. The school is part of the Hoke County Schools district, which is ranked 167 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Upchurch Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (42.26%) and Hispanic (26.79%) students compared to the state average. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in EOG (End-of-Grade) assessments, is generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in reading. However, the school performs better than the state average in 5th-grade science. Interestingly, Upchurch Elementary's African American students perform significantly better than the state average, ranking in the top 30% of North Carolina elementary schools, while the school's Hispanic, White, and English Language Learner (ELL) students perform below the state average.

Upchurch Elementary faces several key challenges, including declining statewide rankings, achievement gaps among student subgroups, and the high poverty level of its student population, with over 99% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. However, the school's diverse student body and the strong performance of its African American students suggest that there are also opportunities for growth and improvement. By learning from higher-performing nearby schools, such as Rockfish Hoke Elementary and Don D Steed Elementary, and implementing targeted strategies to address the needs of its diverse student population, Upchurch Elementary can work towards improving its academic outcomes and providing a high-quality education for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This the worst elementary school I have ever encountered. The VP is very rude and unprofessional. This school is not accommodating for special needs children. Absolutely no security. Parents have to risk their children’s safety when walking them to class by crossing a road to get them to school. No sign to indicate where you can’t park. This is not a military friendly school. This school is a disaster waiting to happen. I am currently looking for a new home in a different school district. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
