J T Barber Elementary

Summary:

J T Barber Elementary is a public elementary school in New Bern, North Carolina, serving 284 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Craven County Board of Education district.

J T Barber Elementary faces significant challenges, with consistently low test scores, high poverty rates, and poor statewide rankings compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher percentage of African American students (59.86%) and an extremely high rate of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (98.73% to 98.94%) compared to surrounding schools. Academically, J T Barber Elementary underperforms the district and state averages in proficiency rates for EOG Mathematics, Reading, and Science tests, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina elementary schools. As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Most of the teachers are approachable and seem to work hard for the students. The principal seems bi-polar, some days she is happy and others she is stomping around with a scowl. The cafeteria food is awful, my kid asked me to pack his lunch after the first three days.

It seems like all administration cares about are test scores. My kid said his class lost recess because some students weren't taking 'these things' seriously enough. If you are thinking about moving to New Bern do not rent or buy in this area especially if your kid is average or above average. You'll be doing him/her an injustice. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
