Oxendine Elementary

Summary:

Oxendine Elementary is a public elementary school in Maxton, North Carolina, serving 289 students in grades PK-6. The school stands out for its high percentage of Native American students (80.28%) and extremely high poverty rates, with nearly 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite the school's unique demographics, Oxendine Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of North Carolina elementary schools, with a statewide ranking between 968 and 1446 out of 1505 schools over the past several years. The school's performance on state assessments is also below the Public Schools of Robeson County and state averages in both mathematics and reading across all grade levels. Nearby schools with similar Native American student populations, such as Prospect Elementary, generally outperform Oxendine Elementary, suggesting that the high Native American population alone does not fully explain the school's low academic performance.

The combination of a high poverty rate, high percentage of Native American students, and low district ranking suggests that Oxendine Elementary may face unique challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students. Factors such as access to resources, teacher quality, and community support may play a significant role in the school's academic outcomes. Addressing these underlying issues and collaborating with the district, community, and other successful schools with similar demographics could provide valuable insights and strategies to improve educational outcomes for Oxendine Elementary's students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to Elementary School here. I was an exceptional student in an exceptional school. I enjoyed how the community seemed to come together to support this school. I enjoyed this school and to my opinion it is the best school in Robeson County. I had many excellent teachers who worked hard to prepare their students. I believe if it was not for the little shove Oxendine gave me i would not be currently attending Early College High School. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
