The school is part of the Paterson Public School District, which is ranked 572 out of 613 school districts in New Jersey and is rated 0 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Eastside High School consistently ranks among the lowest-performing high schools in New Jersey, with academic performance significantly below the state and district averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 5.1% of 9th-grade students were proficient or better in NJSLA/English Language Arts, compared to the Paterson Public School District score of 17.8% and the New Jersey state score of 58.1%. The school's performance is particularly low in mathematics, with only 0.4% of 9th-grade students and 0.4% of students in the Algebra I end-of-course exam being proficient or better in the 2023-2024 school year. However, the school's four-year graduation rate of 91.1% in the 2022-2023 school year is on par with the state and district averages, despite a relatively high dropout rate ranging from 1.2% to 7.8% in recent years.

Interestingly, the nearby schools within the Paterson Public School District, such as Newcomers High School, Rosa L. Parks School of Fine and Performing Arts, International High School, and Paterson STEAM High School, generally outperform Eastside High School in academic metrics and student outcomes, despite also performing poorly compared to the state averages. The per-student spending at Eastside High School and other nearby schools within the Paterson Public School District is generally higher than the state average, suggesting that the issue may not be solely related to funding, but rather the effective utilization of resources and implementation of educational strategies.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The state has done very little or nothing to fix the problems at Eastside High School since they took over in 1992. The teachers struggle to teach with the problems such as violence, drugs, cuts, faul language, improper dressing, truancy and racism. Overall disruptive behavior, disrespect, towards all staff members including security and administration,( from students and parents.) The state claims they are doing the necessary but the truth is after eighteen years the state has been very incopetent. Main examples: NO cameras, No distict support, very little or no consequences for students, policing efforts are very poor. Not to mention rampant gang violence in and out of the the school building. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
