School 21

Summary:

School 21 is an elementary school in Paterson, New Jersey, serving grades PK-8 with 690 students. Unfortunately, this school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with academic performance significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas.

For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 5.2% of 3rd graders, 1.4% of 4th graders, and 6.3% of 5th graders at School 21 were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to state averages of 43.6%, 50.8%, and 52.3% respectively. The math proficiency rates are even lower, ranging from 1.2% to 6.7% across grades 3-8, compared to state averages of 19.4% to 47.6%. Additionally, School 21 has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 16.6% to 49.6% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state and Paterson Public School District averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Paterson Public School District, such as School 26, School 1, and School 13, also perform poorly on academic measures, but generally outperform School 21 across the board, suggesting that the challenges facing this school are not unique to it, but rather indicative of systemic issues within the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a former elementary school student at 21, I recall fondly the somewhat strictness of the curriculum for every student at that time up to second grade: 1956-1959... Of course, I cannot address how much things have changed since but its ancient history was embedded with excellent staff and teachers (eg., Misses Minick, kindergarten, who made a very large footprint of an impression, among others). So this one review is belated but deserved. Good luck 21 students. Always look ahead. Close Quote

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
