Cobble Hill School Of American Studies

Summary:

Cobble Hill School Of American Studies is a public magnet high school in Brooklyn, New York, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 316. Despite relatively high funding and resources, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New York high schools and received low ratings from SchoolDigger, indicating it is one of the lower-performing high schools in the state.

Cobble Hill School Of American Studies struggles with low graduation rates, high dropout rates, and very high chronic absenteeism compared to state and district averages. The school's proficiency rates on Regents/Common Core exams are consistently lower than the state and district averages across all subject areas, often by 20-40 percentage points. The school serves a diverse student population, with a high percentage of students from low-income families. Nearby schools in the same district, such as Brooklyn High School Of The Arts, Khalil Gibran International Academy, and Brooklyn Collaborative Studies, generally outperform Cobble Hill School Of American Studies across various metrics.

Despite the relatively high funding and resources, as well as a low student-teacher ratio, Cobble Hill School Of American Studies struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively. The school's underperformance suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as school leadership, curriculum, and support services, may be contributing to the challenges the school faces. Comparison to nearby schools in the same New York City Geographic District #15 indicates that the school's performance is significantly below its peers in the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Abysmal staff especially the principal. Forced to take optional classes you shouldn't have to take, Italian being a prime example. Disgusting staff and executives that agonize students, including honor students primarily to take tests and classes that they either don't want to take or aren't prepared to take. Additionally, kids are horrific in behavior and disregard the feelings and joynnof their fellow classmates. Empathy is sadly a missed trait in this school. Overall, this school should close down, all it does is breed endless agony and eternal suffering. Close Quote

Open Quote Coming to this school was the worst decision I ever made. In this school I'm missing out on a real high school experience. There's no freedom whats so ever, teachers make their classes so boring that we fall asleep. Students do whatever they want whever they want, theres no one to stop it. I regret that im waisting my precius 4 years in this so call "high school". I wish there was a way to get out of this school, i dont want to come here anymore, im scared. There are desks being thrown in the classrooms, students do not know how to behave and the DOE closes their eyes on this. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
