Solvay High School

Summary:

Solvay High School is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Solvay, NY, with a student population of 458. The school is part of the Solvay Union Free School District, which is ranked 696 out of 865 school districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Solvay High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York high schools, typically in the 600-800 range out of over 1,200 schools. The school's performance on Regents/Common Core exams is mixed, with some subjects like Algebra II and English Language Arts performing above the state average, while others like Algebra I, Chemistry, and Living Environment performing below. Solvay High School's performance on these exams is generally on par with or slightly below its district average, indicating room for improvement. The school has a relatively high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with around 70-75% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Solvay High School's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated between 84-89% in recent years, which is slightly below the state average, and the school's dropout rate has also varied, ranging from 4.9% to 10% in the past few years, which is higher than the state's average.

Solvay High School's performance is generally on par with or slightly below the nearby schools in the Syracuse area, such as Nottingham High School, Liverpool High School, and Henninger High School, which are all part of the Syracuse City School District. However, Solvay High School performs significantly better than the Syracuse City School District average on most Regents/Common Core exams, indicating that it is one of the stronger schools in the area. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and relatively high chronic absenteeism rate, which ranges from 34-48% in recent years, may be contributing factors to its relatively lower academic performance compared to more affluent districts like West Genesee and Westhill.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a student at Solvay High School, i can say without any doubt that there is no other school in central New York that i would rather be an enrolled student at. Solvay offers incredible one on one student to teacher atmosphere due to the small size of our district. This allows the students to feel comfortable to stay for extra help when the student feels welcomed by being a very known student to that teacher. i also would like to state that the teaching methods of Solvay school district is very much like a private institution, as we also have a very high graduating percentage. Solvay shows extreme involvement in the community and for the sake of all students. Solvay has always displayed a very welcoming and high standard for the students. Solvay school district also has an extremely low rating for bullying and violence. as i have experienced in all years of my life in the solvay school district, that no matter what grade or clique, we always have each others backs as a whole for the fact that Solvay has created and supplied an incredible trusting community and learning structure. i highly suggest Solvay as an excellent school district, and not even the school district, but the community in whole. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
