Montessori School 31

Summary:

Montessori School 31 is an elementary school located in Yonkers, NY that serves grades PK-6 with 343 students. It is part of the Yonkers City School District, which is ranked 645 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Montessori School 31 has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of that time period.

Montessori School 31's test scores are generally below the Yonkers City School District and New York state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA compared to 42.6% statewide, and only 40% were proficient in math compared to 53.93% statewide. The school performs better for certain student subgroups, with African American students ranking in the top 3 out of 5 stars, while Hispanic and White students rank lower. English Language Learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds perform particularly poorly, ranking in the bottom 1 or 2 stars. Despite spending around $20,000 per student, which is higher than the district average, Montessori School 31 still struggles to achieve strong academic results.

Compared to nearby schools, Montessori School 31 performs worse overall. Schools like Patricia A. Dichiaro, Kahlil Gibran, and Paideia School 15 all outperform Montessori School 31 on test scores and other metrics. The magnet schools in the area, such as Family School 32 and Paideia School 15, tend to have higher test scores and rankings than traditional public schools like Montessori School 31, suggesting that the magnet school model may be more effective in this district. The high free/reduced lunch rate at Montessori School 31 likely contributes to its lower performance compared to wealthier nearby districts like Bronxville.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school uses the Montessori Curriculum which combines grades but is abused with a large class size (District is well aware and uses the montessori method as as excuse.) If you actually research the schools ranking and test scores you will see how poorly they compare in Westchester and even to other schools in Yonkers. Administration within this school really needs to improve this, it is insulting to the children. The front office gave an attitude most of the time, only one young hispanic lady was kind, smiling and very sweet to the children. I saw many things in this school I shouldn't have in regards to school aides not being patient or compassionate to preschoolers at the start of the school year. You would think kindness to those who can't speak up would be obvious. At my child's new school the attitude and friendliness is subpar. I am so happy I took my child out of this school. I hope this future year is different for those starting or continuing there... Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
