Eliza Northrop Elementary

Summary:

Eliza Northrop Elementary is a public elementary school in Medina, Ohio, serving 558 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Medina City School District. The school has consistently strong academic performance, with proficiency rates often exceeding state and district averages, but faces challenges such as increasing chronic absenteeism and declining statewide rankings.

Eliza Northrop Elementary has a predominantly white student population, with 82.26% of students identifying as white, which is higher than the state average and the nearby Highland Virtual Learning Academy, which has a more diverse student body. The school's 5th-grade science proficiency rate was 72.8% in the 2023-2024 school year, compared to the state average of 64% and the district average of 80.6%. However, the school's chronic absenteeism rate has increased from 5.2% in 2019-2020 to 11.7% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the 10.9% rate at the nearby Highland Virtual Learning Academy.

Despite the school's strong academic performance, its statewide ranking has declined from 363 out of 1,610 Ohio elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 622 out of 1,577 in 2023-2024. The school's performance on various student subgroups, such as students with special needs, has also been mixed, with the school's ranking for special education students declining from 243 out of 856 in 2022-2023 to 682 out of 900 in 2023-2024. The school's leadership and the Medina City School District should continue to monitor these areas and implement strategies to address them, ensuring that all students receive a high-quality education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son switched to this school after we had major issues with a school in Fairlawn area. His teacher and the staff were very helpful in getting him caught up and making friends. He finished last year out well and is very excited to start again this month! The staff is very friendly. My younger son is starting Pre-school there this year too. They are so excited to be in the same building at school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
