Chaney Middle at McGuffey faces significant challenges, with consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, far below average test scores, and a statewide ranking in the bottom 5-10% of Ohio middle schools. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 8th-grade science proficiency was just 12.2%, compared to 22.5% for the Youngstown City district and 62.1% for the state. The challenges faced by Chaney Middle at McGuffey appear to be deeply rooted in the socioeconomic factors of the community it serves, with a high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds. The school's rankings for specific student subgroups, such as female, male, African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, are also among the lowest in the state. Despite these challenges, the school's performance has remained consistently low over the past several years, with little to no improvement in test scores, chronic absenteeism, or statewide rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Found out my Son has been getting bullied as well as many other kids at this school. My thing is how do they not know kids are being bullied for the past few weeks? I understand that teachers cant be everywhere and the student teacher ratio isnt the best but I feel that the staff in general are failing the students as both temporary guardians for the students mental and physical well being while they are at school and, are failing to notice the maltreatment by the childrens peers. It is their jobs to keep our kids safe at school while providing them education outside of the home. BLATANT LACK OF AWARENESS, While I am of the conviction that school personnel are responsible for keeping kids safe, I am equally convinced that teachers today have so much on their plates that safeguarding kids’ emotional well-being is a real challenge for them. Nonetheless, be clear I believe that educators and parents share a collective responsibility to create a culture in which bullying is unacceptable and to protect kids from physical and psychological harm. When schoolchildren are bullied relentlessly and without adult intervention, they have difficulty succeeding academically. For this reason alone (notwithstanding their moral obligation), bullying is a problem educators are duty-bound to address. These issues will be documented each time and the plan of actions discussed with the teacher, If progress is not made or I hear the bland lip service such as:

• I didn’t see it happening and I can’t just take your child’s word that it did.
• Kids will be kids, you know.
• This stuff just happens. It’ll all blow over soon.
• Your child just needs to have a thicker skin.
• The child you are accusing of bullying is an honor student and Vice President of the Student Council. I just can’t believe he would do such a thing. Are you sure your child isn’t exaggerating?
I will then take further steps up the school board all the way to the very top if thats what sadly it will take to force teachers to do their moral oath and obligations to the parents and most importantly the students in which they are charged of protecting and educating, or else why come to work. This is not a threat this is a promise. I personally as a parent and human being take my childs mental and physical health serious, Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
