Open Quote Not much good except it is a beautiful school. The school is ran by a small kabal of socialist thinkers which revolve around the principal Sandy Phillips. They cannot retain pre-k or kindergarten teachers and ran one of the best ones off for her political leanings. My children experienced racism and bullying there which seemed to be tolerated by some teachers who seemed to chalk it up to white privilege. There hung a MLK project in the hallway that had a fill-in-the-blank assignment which some child filled in "I have a dream that someday - white people will be nice." The first grade teacher my oldest daughter had was Punneo who shoved her in a corner the first month and said she was a problem the rest of the year, but barely defining why other than she didn't pay attention. Her room was always a disorganized mess with kids always seeming to run amok. The last year we were there my daughter was stabbed in the arm with a pencil twice within 3 months by the same boy whom they did nothing to - we were told that surprised them and that "Angel never does that sort of thing." There's a reason why the test scores there are horrendous - because they are more concerned about employing social engineers rather than teachers. We finally got out before my pre-k child was halfway done with her first year and my 1st grade child had just started being bullied and ostracized in a different classroom under Washington. DO NOT GO HERE OR AVOID 1ST GRADE AT ALL COSTS! My oldest daughter still hates school due to her experience with Punneo. Close Quote

Open Quote My oldest seems to do alright, but has had to deal with a lot of bullying in the past.
My middle child has a mild dyslexia and very slight aspergers and the teachers ignored me when my husband and I requested to hold her back because she was testing well, but not retaining information.
My youngest hates going to school because the coach and some of the teachers yell. This I have witnessed myself. They are in school not boot camp... settle down there's no excuse for it. Close Quote

Open Quote I have volunteered at Mark Twain since 1999. The positive changes in the school have been remarkable. The MAPS for Kids project is completed and looks terrific! We have the best tutoring program in Oklahoma City. We also have awesome community partners! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
