Gilbert Heights Elementary School

Summary:

Gilbert Heights Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Portland, Oregon, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 420 students. The school is part of the David Douglas School District, which is ranked 102 out of 140 school districts in Oregon and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Gilbert Heights Elementary School consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 30% of 3rd graders, 37.7% of 4th graders, and 40% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district averages of 31.6%, 31.7%, and 32.9%, respectively. The school's performance in Mathematics is even lower, with only 23.3% of 3rd graders, 33.3% of 4th graders, and 10.9% of 5th graders achieving proficiency, compared to the district's 27.3%, 27.5%, and 17.6% respectively. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of Oregon elementary schools for male students and Asian students in ELA, and in the bottom 15% for African American students in ELA in the 2018-2019 school year.

When comparing Gilbert Heights Elementary School to other nearby schools within the David Douglas School District, it becomes evident that the school is underperforming. For example, Cherry Park Elementary School, which is only 1.73 miles away, consistently outperforms Gilbert Heights in both ELA and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. Despite the school's academic struggles, the per-student spending at Gilbert Heights Elementary School ($19,863 in 2021-2022) is higher than the district average and some of the nearby schools, suggesting that the issue may not be solely related to funding, but rather the effective allocation and utilization of resources.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have 5 kids and they have all gone through this school. The teachers and the staff are all great! Close Quote

Open Quote I was a special needs student who fell through the cracks. I was treated poorly by several staff and students and my struggles were rarely acknowledged by staff to my mother. They never tried to evaluate me for any learning disabilities and declared me to have 'school phobia' when I started not coming ( I was having really bad anxiety/etc toward the middle of fifth grade ). I'm an adult now and I'm honestly amazed now that I look back that none of the staff were fired or suspended. ( I'm 19 this year. I went to Gilbert Heights from first grade to fifth grade. ) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
