Glenfair Elementary School

Summary:

Glenfair Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 429 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Reynolds School District, which is ranked 137 out of 140 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Glenfair Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Oregon elementary schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 674 out of 710 schools.

Glenfair Elementary consistently underperforms compared to state and district averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 21.3% of 3rd graders, 18.8% of 4th graders, and 26.7% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state averages of 39%, 41.9%, and 46.9%, respectively. The school's mathematics proficiency rates are even lower, with only 13.1% of 3rd graders, 8.7% of 4th graders, and 12.2% of 5th graders meeting or exceeding standards. This low academic performance is likely due to the school's high percentage of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a 99.53% free and reduced-price lunch rate.

When comparing Glenfair Elementary to nearby schools within the same district, such as Rockwood Preparatory Academy and Margaret Scott Elementary, the academic performance gap is significant. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Rockwood Preparatory Academy had 35.4% of 4th graders proficient in ELA, compared to Glenfair's 18.8%. Similarly, Margaret Scott Elementary had 33.3% of 4th graders proficient in ELA, outperforming Glenfair by a wide margin. Despite Glenfair's higher spending per student at $17,982, the school's challenges appear to be a complex combination of factors, including student demographics, teacher quality, and school leadership.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Glenfair Elementary is an embarrassment to Oregon school and a waist of tax dollars. My son was a victim, bullied by a couple male staff members. This school is nightmare with no accountability I urge you to report any and all of your concerns to the school board. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
