Old County Road School

Summary:

Old County Road School is an elementary school located in Smithfield, Rhode Island, serving 229 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school's academic performance has been mixed, with stronger proficiency rates in 3rd grade but significantly lower rates in 5th grade compared to the Smithfield district and the state average.

The school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 16.59% in 2021-2022 to 34.06% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students. However, the school's per-student spending has increased, and the student-teacher ratio has decreased, suggesting a commitment to investing in the school's resources and providing more individualized attention to students.

While the increased spending and smaller class sizes may contribute to improved academic outcomes, the inconsistent performance across grade levels and subject areas suggests the need for a closer examination of the school's curriculum, instructional practices, and support systems. By addressing these areas, Old County Road School can work towards more consistent and equitable academic success for all its students.

Open Quote I would like to take this opportunity to share my input on Old County Elementary.

I have experience with other public schools in RI. However, by far I have to rate Old County Elementary as one of the best. I attribute this to the Principal Mrs. Sullivan and the teachers. There seems to be a synergy amongst them all. Mrs. Sullivan is hands on and involved with her students & their families. She is very knowledgable, helpful, responsive and caring. The teachers exude the same attitude.

Its refreshing to know that with all the responsibilities they have can provide support with a personal touch.
I feel secure and confident my child is in great hands at Old County.

Keep leading & setting the high standards. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
