John F. Horgan School

Summary:

John F. Horgan School is an elementary school in West Warwick, Rhode Island, serving 467 students from kindergarten to 4th grade. The school is part of the West Warwick School District, which is ranked 51 out of 60 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

John F. Horgan School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Rhode Island elementary schools, with only 20.1% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 14.3% proficient or better in Mathematics, significantly below the state and district averages. The school's high poverty rate, with 61.46% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to these challenges. Despite relatively high per-student spending of $13,930, the school's academic performance does not reflect the higher level of resources, suggesting that they may not be effectively utilized.

Comparing John F. Horgan School to nearby schools, such as Greenbush Elementary School and Wakefield Hills Elementary School, which are also part of the West Warwick School District, reveals that they perform better on RICAS tests, though still lag behind the state averages. When compared to higher-performing schools in neighboring districts, such as Hopkins Hill School in Coventry and Hope School in Scituate, the performance gap becomes even more pronounced, highlighting the potential for improvement at John F. Horgan School.

Open Quote Parent of K and 2nd grade students. The school environment is very friendly and acceptable. I have not heard of any major problems regarding discipline or bullying. All personnel is very warm and friendly; from the staff to the teachers.

Teachers have managed to get my children into the habit of reading which is good and development of their artistic skills.

nevertheless, I feel the overall work / homework assigned to the kids could be brought up a notch. math and writting skills could be improved with more homework...as well as geography and history. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
