Summary:

Yes Prep - Hobby is a public charter middle school in Houston, Texas, serving grades 6-10 with a total enrollment of 482 students. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District, which is ranked 466 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating.

Yes Prep - Hobby stands out for its racial diversity, with a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (71.16%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 74.34% to 95.47% Hispanic students. However, the school's academic performance on STAAR tests is generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in mathematics, with only 25-30% of students proficient in 2023-2024 compared to the state average of 31.89-40.23%. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic and English Language Learner students performing relatively well, while African American and male students lag behind, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas middle schools.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($20,857 in 2020-2021) than the nearby Pasadena Independent School District schools ($11,061 to $11,762 per student), Yes Prep - Hobby's academic performance is generally lower. The school has also seen a higher dropout rate in recent years, reaching 3.4% in 2021-2022, compared to the 0.0% to 1.5% rates of nearby schools. These findings suggest the need for a comprehensive review of the school's instructional practices, resource allocation, and support systems to address the performance gaps and improve student success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote An extremely toxic environment ever since the new principal got hired. I just started working here and the worst school by far in my experience. So many teachers are leaving for the same reason. Feels like a prison camp and that is not how a school should feel for anyone. This school goes against my beliefs as an educator. Close Quote

Open Quote I do not recommend this school because there is a substance abuse issue and violence and behavioral issue at every grade level. The administration covers things up and overworks the teachers with minimum support but maximum micromanaging. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
