Heflin Elementary

Summary:

Heflin Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving students from kindergarten to 4th grade as part of the Alief Independent School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Heflin Elementary's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in mathematics. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with relatively strong results for African American students but struggles with the performance of Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students, as well as students with special education needs. Despite spending a relatively high amount per student and having a low student-to-teacher ratio, the school's overall performance is consistently low, ranking in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools.

Compared to nearby schools within the Alief Independent School District, such as Youens Elementary, Liestman Elementary, and Mahanay Elementary, Heflin Elementary's performance is generally lower, with these nearby schools having higher STAAR test scores, higher rankings, and serving a more diverse student population with lower percentages of students from low-income families. While Heflin Elementary's resources suggest potential for improvement, the school faces significant challenges in addressing the needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Overcrowded, understaffed boot-camp-type school. GT students are not challeged due to lack of teachers. Children get screamed at a lot, their spirits crushed and embarrased in front of peers, teachers and visitors. This coming year I will bite the bullet so my children can go to private school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
