Emerson Elementary

Summary:

Emerson Elementary is a public elementary school in Amarillo, Texas, serving 484 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Amarillo Independent School District, which is ranked 442 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Emerson Elementary has shown a mixed performance on STAAR tests, outperforming the district and state in 4th grade Reading and Mathematics, but underperforming in 3rd grade Reading and 5th grade Science. However, the school has demonstrated strong performance for specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with Special Education needs, ranking in the top 10-15% of Texas elementary schools in these areas. With a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Emerson Elementary serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged population, which may present unique challenges but also suggests the school's efforts to support these students.

Compared to nearby schools in the Amarillo ISD, Emerson Elementary generally outperforms schools like Forest Hill Elementary and Whittier Elementary in STAAR test scores, particularly in 4th grade Reading and Mathematics. However, the school lags behind schools like George Washington Carver Elementary Academy and Glenwood Elementary in certain areas, such as 5th grade Science. Overall, Emerson Elementary appears to be making progress in improving student outcomes, but still faces some challenges that the school community is working to address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff at this school will go over and above to make sure every students succeeds. Each student is treated with respect and given opportunity to show their gifts through learning. This newly built school carries with it school pride as it displays college banners outside of each classroom. Students learn that there are no excuses to hold them back from going to college. My child is in the second grade and reading above grade level because of the care and dedication from the teachers and staff. The after school program allows parents like me to have my child in an extended day learning environment that helps her with her school work. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
