Cunningham Elementary

Summary:

Cunningham Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 370 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cunningham Elementary faces several academic challenges. The school's STAAR test scores are generally lower than the AISD and Texas state averages across all grade levels and subjects, particularly in mathematics and science. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with Special Education needs performing poorly compared to their peers. Cunningham's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 1,545 out of 4,581 Texas elementary schools in 2021-2022 to 2,906 out of 4,359 in 2017-2018, and its SchoolDigger rating has also varied from 1 star to 3 stars out of 5.

Compared to nearby elementary schools, such as Sunset Valley Elementary and Cowan Elementary, Cunningham generally performs worse academically, with lower STAAR test scores and lower rankings. The nearby Wayside Eden Park Academy, a public charter school, also outperforms Cunningham on most STAAR measures. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and its relatively high per-student spending without commensurate academic outcomes suggest that factors beyond funding, such as instructional practices and school leadership, may be contributing to the school's performance issues.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We love Cunningham Elementary, the teachers, staff, and principal. Also, the results for tests on SchoolDigger don't match up with the TEA site, the scores are much better on the official TEA report for Cunningham. Close Quote

Open Quote Our daughter is finishing her third year at Cunningham and we've had nothing but great success. There are so many programs and great staff. Each year the teachers have been very engaged in my daughter's learning and met her advanced needs very well. I love the diversity of the school and look forward to three more fantastic years. Parent involvement is the key to any great school so if you're concerned with your child's learning, get involved. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
