Edwin J Kiest Elementary

Summary:

Edwin J Kiest Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 574 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Dallas Independent School District, which is ranked 557 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite increased per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Edwin J Kiest Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with low academic performance across all grade levels and subjects. The school's STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) proficiency rates are significantly below the district and state averages, particularly in science, where only 2.86% of 5th graders were proficient or better in 2023-2024, compared to 17.71% for the district and 26.29% for the state. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of its student subgroups, such as African American, Gifted and Talented, English Language Learner, and Special Education students.

Interestingly, the nearby S.S. Conner Elementary and Larry G. Smith Elementary, which also serve high percentages of economically disadvantaged and minority students, generally perform better than Edwin J Kiest Elementary on academic measures. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to the performance differences between these schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They have a bad habit of waiting till the last minute to notify parents of things. They only give a week notice for things such as a Science project/fair. They have run out of food in the cafeteria on numerous occasions for proper nourishment for what is acceptable. It took them till 2011 to get a proper pick up drop off system in place and while they started with parking lot monitors, they have since stopped this practice.

I feel bad for the teachers as they are pretty good here, but the rest of the school itself is lackluster at best. The performance hall needs an upgrade and the sound system in there is horrible. I don't agree with force-feeding the children Spanish when it is only an elective in High Schools. How do you think other cultures such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, African, French or any other dialect feel when they don't get a report card or anything else in their language. That in itself is discrimination.

There are never any cops watching the school zones and the people in the area seem to totally disregard the speed limit all together at all 4 corners of the school itself.
It is a wonder no one has been run over when people are doing 45mph in a 20mph zone.
I'm sure I am missing a few things, but I am sure this is enough to deter any interested school-goers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
