Woodrow Wilson High School

Summary:

Woodrow Wilson High School is a public high school in Dallas, Texas, serving 1,809 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Dallas Independent School District, which is ranked 557 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Woodrow Wilson High School has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (60.14%) compared to the district and state averages. The school's academic performance is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, but its students excel in the U.S. History EOC exam, with 77.97% scoring proficient or better, significantly higher than the district (63.31%) and state (69.1%) averages. The school's four-year graduation rate has been relatively high, ranging from 86.6% to 92.4% over the past five years, on par with or slightly above the district and state averages. However, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White students consistently ranking among the top 10% of Texas high schools, while the performance of Hispanic, African American, and economically disadvantaged students is generally below the district and state averages.

Compared to nearby schools, Woodrow Wilson High School generally performs better than Lincoln Humanities/Communications Magnet High School and James Madison High School, but lags behind the high-performing Irma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School and the charter schools Uplift Atlas Preparatory - High School and Uplift Luna Preparatory High School. The school's declining statewide ranking and the significant disparities in subgroup performance suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address these issues and improve the educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote One of few area schools to offer the International Baccalaureatee Diploma Programme, Woodrow also has several college prep academies with a wide range of Advanced Placement courses. The Washington Post uses those tests to rate Woodrow above all but two North Texas comprehensive high schools. The STEM Academy, a Project Lead the Way certified premier academy (same curriculum as Brooklyn Tech), boasts the largest engineering enrollment in Texas and has a good record of getting its grads into the some of the top engineering colleges in the nation. The robotics team regularly beats prestigious private schools. Similarly Woodrow had business and arts academies which are renowned for national competition. Woodrow is one of only three schools in Texas where business students are certified by the IRS. It has the largest dance program in Dallas and the longest running musicals of any school in Texas, possibly the nation. Woodrow also has some of the best facilities, thanks to a new science - arts wing (with a black box theater) and another wing to be constructed soon - which will include a new competition gymnasium. Speaking of that, Woodrow is an athletic powerhouse. Also has a wonderful ROTC program, which for many years was the largest in the nation. The school does it all and does it beautifully. It's the essential All-American "small town" high school experience two miles from the heart of the nation's fourth largest metro area. Close Quote

Open Quote 1. Newsweek's 2010 Top High Schools in America released -- Newsweek identified the top 1622 (out of ~22,000) high schools in the country and Woodrow moved up about 200 placed to #422, a ranking higher than area suburban schools (including Plano, Allen, Coppell, Southlake Carroll) and rival Lake Highlands in RISD. That puts Woodrow in the top 2% in the country!

2. This year's class of 266 graduates is 88% college bound vs. 64% college bound last year.

3. So far, it looks like this year's class has received offers of about $8 million in scholarships, grants, and awards. Averaged out, this would be more than $35,000 per college-bound student.

4. 34 students were named AP Scholars.

5. Last November, Woodrow won the ACT College Readiness Award. Only high schools ranked in the top 5% are considered for this honor.

6. This year, Woodrow's Debate Team advanced to state competition and a two-member team won a national debate award in New York City. Two years ago,
the Mock Trial Team finished second in Texas and was invited to Harvard University for a week-long seminar.

7. Woodrow has been selected as on of four Texas candidate schools to be designated an International Baccalaureate World School.

8. Pre-IB is now offered to ninth graders. Over 130 students applied for Woodrow's new IB Program and that list has been narrowed down to 80, with substantial numbers being students who otherwise would have attended private schools.

9. Woodrow was ranked in the top twenty of all 4-A schools in Dallas Morning News All-Sports Award competition. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
