Joseph Gilbert Elementary

Summary:

Joseph Gilbert Elementary is a public elementary school located in Austin, Texas, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 669. The school is part of the Del Valle Independent School District, which is ranked 878 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Joseph Gilbert Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools. The school's performance on STAAR tests is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, only 15% of 3rd-grade students achieved proficiency or better in STAAR Mathematics, compared to the state average of 40.86%. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (91.03%) and the racial composition of the student population, which is predominantly Hispanic (78.48%), may be contributing factors to these academic struggles.

Interestingly, the nearby Austin Discovery School and KIPP Alegria Pri, which serve similar student populations, generally outperform Joseph Gilbert Elementary on STAAR assessments, particularly in reading and mathematics. This suggests that alternative educational models and approaches may be worth exploring to improve outcomes at Joseph Gilbert Elementary. Additionally, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending do not appear to be translating into improved academic performance, indicating that other factors, such as instructional practices and school leadership, may need to be addressed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Although the Del Valle school seems to be maligned by these statistics, the teachers and staff are very helpfully and willing to do extras above and beyond the expected. The G&T program is young, as are the students, but pushes for excellence. We have been very happy and our friends who are teachers tell me that the performance rankings will be skewed do to the population that may not value formal education so highly. Close Quote

Open Quote Gilbert suffers from two major issues which have directly affected the district's rating in the State of Texas.

The first issue is that the entire Del Valle School District treats English as a second language. All documentation and communication is at least 50% Spanish. Non-Spanish speaking kids do not get as much attention and assistance as the Spanish-speaking children. As a Parent I have seen this first-hand for many years and it is very frustrating. This issue is most painful when trying to get your child some type of tutoring assistance. The tutoring sessions at Del Valle are mostly in Spanish, and my child receives busy-work instead of exercises that are focused on his needs.

The second issue is specific to Gilbert Elementary. When your child is rewarded or punished during school hours the Parents are not notified. Assistant Principal Dwiggins has told me this numerous times, so it appears to be school policy.
If your child is bullied by another student, or gets into any situation that Gilbert determines should result in discipline you will not be notified about the situation.
Note that as required in the State of Texas, the School Nurse does contact parents, and does document everything a student required.
The reason I feel this is such a big issue is that since the parents are not involved, the school will make rather odd and misplaced decisions about how to discipline the students. Most trivial incidents result in the Del Valle equivalent of Detention. You are NOT notified if you child is sent to detention.
My child was disciplined multiple times for odd incidents. In most cases when I heard that my child was in trouble and visited the school, the Principal could not even determine what the facts were and had to 'cancel' the discipline.
This also means that had I not been involved as Parent, my child would have been punished for something that he did not do and did not even know about.
As a result, my children have always feared the environment at Gilbert Elementary because they may be reprimanded at any time for something that they know nothing about.
I witnessed children that were punched by another student being sent to Detention multiple times. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
