Juan Seguin Elementary

Summary:

Juan Seguin Elementary is a public elementary school in Richmond, Texas, serving 896 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Fort Bend Independent School District. While the school's overall academic performance is below district and state averages, it stands out for its diverse student population and strong performance in certain subgroups.

One of Juan Seguin Elementary's key differentiating factors is its racial diversity, with a higher percentage of African American (45.87%) and Asian (22.1%) students compared to surrounding schools. Academically, the school's African American and low-income students perform particularly well, ranking in the top 20% and 30% of Texas elementary schools, respectively. The school also boasts a highly ranked gifted and talented program, placing 1st out of 3,184 Texas elementary schools in the 2018-2019 school year.

However, the school has faced some challenges in recent years, with its statewide ranking steadily declining from 1,096 out of 4,286 Texas elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 2,399 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024. Additionally, while the African American and low-income students excel, the Asian and Hispanic student populations at Juan Seguin Elementary lag behind their counterparts at the district and state levels. When compared to nearby schools like Oakland Elementary, Juan Seguin generally underperforms, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support to address these achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The administration and staff are very professional. They are fully focused on educating their students and encourage parent participation which is something I really appreciate. The principal is very much in control but has a very kind disposition. I'm confident that my children are in good hands. Close Quote

Open Quote Most teachers in the school are really good and they care for the students. The problem is the principal. She is very rude to the staff and parents. The PTA members don't want to continue helping because the principal doesn't appreciate them. The staff is under a lot of pressure. Teachers can't be creative as the principal only wants them to do things her way regardless of it being the best for the children. Lots of potential in the school, but principal really needs to retire. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
