Wisdom High School

Summary:

Wisdom High School is a public high school in Houston, Texas, serving 2,260 students in grades 9-12 with a diverse student population that is predominantly Hispanic (71.77%).

Despite its large enrollment, Wisdom High School has consistently struggled academically, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas high schools. Its performance on state assessments is significantly below state and district averages, with proficiency rates ranging from just 13-37% across different subject areas. The school also grapples with low graduation rates, ranging from 55.2% to 66%, and high dropout rates of 4.4% to 11.8%. This is likely exacerbated by the fact that 96.95% to 98.28% of Wisdom's students come from low-income families. Certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students, perform particularly poorly, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Texas high schools in their respective categories.

Interestingly, nearby magnet schools like Challenge Early College High School and Sharpstown International School, as well as charter schools like Yes Prep - Gulfton and KIPP Connect Preparatory, significantly outperform Wisdom High School on academic measures, graduation rates, and state assessments, despite Wisdom spending more per student and having a higher student-teacher ratio than these other schools. This suggests that Wisdom High School may need to implement targeted interventions and allocate resources more effectively to address the disparities and improve outcomes for its predominantly low-income and minority student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We moved from gpisd to hisd and this school is in district of where we live. The staff is unproductive in doing what needs to be done for the students. I have had to come to the school three times the two weeks my children have been there to make sure their learning needs are met. I highly would not recommend this school to parents who come from a better school district as we did. Close Quote

Open Quote There's no continuity in administration or in the teaching staff. the school hours are way too long, the schedule changes constantly, there are too many standardized tests. The school only teaches students for ONE reason - to pass the STARR test. The school keeps difficult students long after they demonstrate misconduct, truancy, and other issues that would have students expelled from other schools. Those students harm the education of our babies who want to learn. Teachers are stressed out and constantly wanting to leave the district, and the students can see this. The school gives students computers only if they pay, and then they never use them because some parents cannot afford the computers, and we don't really want our students carrying something home everyday that may attract harm or theft. The computers should have been left in the schools with the teachers. There is no school spirit, there is bullying, widespread drug use, and students have no lockers, cannot carry water into the classroom, can't have a backpack unless it's seethru, and the building is falling apart. Basically the environment is poor for everyone. Big changes are needed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
