Memorial Parkway Elementary

Summary:

Memorial Parkway Elementary is a public elementary school in Katy, Texas, serving 915 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Katy Independent School District, which is ranked 158 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating.

Memorial Parkway Elementary stands out from nearby schools in several key ways. The school has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (77.49%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 14.41% to 41.74% Hispanic. Additionally, Memorial Parkway has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 62.93% to 81.09% over the past 3 years, much higher than the nearby schools, which range from 23.45% to 68.76%. The school's test scores, particularly in reading and math, are generally lower than the Katy ISD and Texas state averages, with 3rd-grade reading proficiency at 45.54% compared to 66.61% for Katy ISD and 48.85% for Texas.

Despite these challenges, Memorial Parkway Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11 to 12.9 over the past 3 years, which is lower than most of the nearby schools. The school's spending per student, ranging from $9,986 to $12,307 over the past 3 years, is also generally higher than the nearby schools. These findings suggest that the district is allocating more resources to Memorial Parkway Elementary, possibly in an effort to address the unique needs of its diverse student population, but the academic performance data indicates that these efforts may not be fully effective.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was fairly unimpressed with the parent/school communication at MPE, or maybe I should say lack thereof. The teachers were caring, but I never felt like I knew what was really going on with my child, and didn’t feel the main staff was overly concerned about it. In particular there were lost/wrongly-documented communications sent from our end which resulted in untimely problems for us that we didn’t need. I’ve since heard they are working on these issues but it’s too little, too late for us. Close Quote

Open Quote I suppose that the ranking would be based on what your expectations are but for us, we have been disappointed. The academic environment is satisfactory though many teachers are young. There is also a high turn-over rate for teachers. Being Texas, they tend to teach to the TAKS test which leaves many students with too much time on their hands. Communication with the school's administrators is nearly non-existent as they rarely return calls. The districts zero-tolerance policy is enforced subjectively. What gets old is the school's administration cow-towing to the non-English speaking parents. There is much more effort to communicate in dual languages than to communicate at all. The school has the capability of communicating by email blasts but chooses not to do so because there's a large percentage of parents that do not provide an email address. Instead, the communications are lost in a sea of xeroxed worksheets and are up to the student to make sure that they are delivered home. We all know that no matter how diligent the parent, sometimes kids don't deliver vital information. One final complaint, is that information is sent out frequently with very little advance notice for events. Working parents are not able to attend because they have little notice to round up babysitters for the younger kids. Academically, the school is fine though could be MUCH more proactive about challenging kids that show potential. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
