Tabasco Elementary

Summary:

Tabasco Elementary is a public elementary school in La Joya, Texas, serving 538 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the La Joya Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 451 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Tabasco Elementary stands out for its unique student population, with a 100% Hispanic student body, significantly higher than the state average and nearby schools in the La Joya ISD. The school's performance has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 1708 out of 4675 Texas elementary schools in 2023-2024 to as low as 3784 out of 4260 in 2013-2014. However, Tabasco Elementary performs particularly well in certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, Special Education students, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, often ranking in the top quartile of Texas elementary schools for these groups. The school's STAAR test scores are generally higher than the La Joya ISD and Texas state averages, especially in Reading and Mathematics for 3rd and 5th grades, though its 5th-grade Science scores lag behind.

Tabasco Elementary's exceptionally high rate of free and reduced lunch recipients, ranging from 93.86% to 98.61% over the past three school years, indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among its student population. When compared to other elementary schools in the La Joya ISD, Tabasco Elementary generally outperforms its peers in STAAR test scores, particularly in Reading and Mathematics, suggesting the school may have effective instructional practices that could be shared with other schools in the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
