Canyon Ridge Middle

Summary:

Canyon Ridge Middle is a public middle school located in Austin, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,104 students. It is part of the Leander Independent School District, which is ranked 200 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Canyon Ridge Middle consistently ranks among the top middle schools in Texas, ranking 72nd out of 2,361 schools in the 2023-2024 school year and receiving a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on STAAR tests is significantly higher than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, 85.87% of 8th-grade students were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 72.45% in the Leander ISD and 54.09% statewide. Canyon Ridge Middle also excels in supporting the academic achievement of various student subgroups, ranking highly for female students, Asian students, Hispanic students, and students with special needs.

While Canyon Ridge Middle is a standout institution, it has a relatively low percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with only 5.62% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This suggests that the school may need to focus on ensuring equitable access and support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, the school's performance in the Gifted and Talented program is not as strong as its overall academic performance, ranking 524th out of 1,481 Texas middle schools in 2022-2023. When compared to nearby schools like Noel Grisham Middle, Cedar Park Middle, and Four Points Middle, Canyon Ridge Middle stands out as a top-performing institution, but the school may need to address socioeconomic and racial achievement gaps to ensure equitable opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is great for you if you want to be a doctor. The amount of pressure and stress is a college level. I had just moved from Alaska to Texas so this was my first year in this school. I was so behind in the education because at my old school they hadn't taught a lot of things that kids in Texas already knew. But the helped me a lot and they are great. The number of projects, tests, and homework pretty much take up all the time you have after school. I would get home from school around 4:30 pm and then started homework 5-5: 30 pm I wouldn't finish homework till 10 or 11 pm. Now I am not the kind of student who would waste time or not try to finish things. Most of the time I wouldn't even get a chance to study for my tests. In one year of being in this school, I gained 20 to 25 pounds because I didn't have the time to get out and the stress killed me. Now I wasn't super skinny before I came to the school but 20 pounds is a lot. Also, I had to make up school hours because I had missed to much school. But keep in mind it was because I was going to therapy. I showed the schools my doctors notes but that did not make up for it. It didn't matter how many notes I had they didn't matter it didn't count. To conclude I would say if you are super smart and want a challenge go here. If you are moving and are researching schools to attend and you haven't been in a Texas school except for lots of stress. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
