Hutchinson Middle

Summary:

Hutchinson Middle is a public magnet middle school in Lubbock, Texas, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 833 students. This high-performing school consistently outperforms the Lubbock Independent School District (ISD) and the state of Texas in academic achievement, earning a strong statewide ranking and 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hutchinson Middle's academic excellence is evident across various metrics. In the 2023-2024 school year, 72.4% of 6th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 51.72% for Lubbock ISD and 54.45% for Texas. The school also excels in the performance of specific student subgroups, with its White and Multi-racial students ranking in the top 10-15% of Texas middle schools, and its English Language Learner students ranking in the top 20%. Additionally, Hutchinson Middle has maintained relatively low dropout rates, ranging from 0.3% to 1.8% over the past several years, which is lower than the district and state averages.

While Hutchinson Middle outperforms the Lubbock ISD and Texas averages, it faces some challenges, such as a significant population of economically disadvantaged students, with 48.98% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. However, the school's diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more balanced than nearby schools like Dunbar College Preparatory Academy and Slaton Middle, is a unique strength. Additionally, Hutchinson Middle spends more per student ($9,179 in 2020-2021) compared to the district average, which may contribute to its strong academic performance. However, the school is outperformed by some nearby schools, such as Lubbock-Cooper Laura Bush Middle and Heritage Middle, which are part of other school districts and have higher statewide rankings and better academic outcomes in certain subject areas.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It's really a great school I am going there right now. I didn't give it five stars because I go there, i gave it five stars because, it has great academics, it has good teachers, the staff there is strict but very fun, and the classes are great. The theater arts program is fantastic!!! The tennis team is outrageous!!! The volleyball team could beat any team in a heartbeat!!! The football team is so fast and manipulative that they play tricks on the field so the other team thinks that this person has the ball when that person has the ball!!! Anyways I would reccomend Hutchinson middle school to anyone anywhere!!! It's a great school your kids will love it here!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
